Travel by HGV and lorry
Kent roads are an important link in the UK's economy. A huge
amount of HGV traffic passes through Kent - particularly to and
from the channel ports.
To help heavy traffic move quickly and smoothly and minimise
impact on the local community and the environment, we have a number
of strategies.
- Route signing to direct lorry traffic to and from commercial
premises by the most appropriate routes.
- Working in partnership with freight associations, the police
service and other bodies to promote good practice and develop
innovative ideas.
- Promoting
Freight Quality Partnerships to ensure lorry traffic is routed
to and from sensitive areas in an effective, environmentally
friendly manner.
- Working with satellite navigation companies to improve
mapping.
We are currently updating a map for lorry drivers to direct them
to principal commercial areas.
Why is it important to manage HGV traffic in Kent?
The efficient movement of freight in Kent is vitally important
to Kent and to the UK economy. It is also important for Kent's
roads.
The steady development of the primary route network over the
past decade has reduced journey times for lorries, but we need to
keep working to manage the increasing amount of HGV traffic as
effectively as possible.
Kent's position between mainland Europe, London and the rest of
the country means that there is a higher than average share of HGVs
on the road network.
