Improving the cycle network
Kent has
over 670 kilometres of cycle network:
- national cycle routes
- regional cycle routes
- recreational cycle routes
- urban cycle networks.
For information about these routes, visit Explore Kent.
Maintaining the cycle network
Well maintained cycle tracks are essential and we are
continually working to improve our service. As part of this, we
have entered into a partnership with the Sustrans Rangers
project.
Rangers are volunteers who are willing to devote some of their
time to looking after the cycle network. Several teams of
volunteer rangers undertake work such as:
- route signing
- basic vegetation clearance
- reporting faults
- surveying the cycle network.
To find out more about the project, call Sustrans on 0117
9150 110 or us on 08458 247 800.
Report a problem
If you notice a problem on one of our cycle routes, please tell
us about it using our online fault reporting form.
What about cycling in the future?
Plans to improve and expand the cycling network, and services
for cyclists are included in Kent's Local Transport Plan. We will
continue to promote the benefits of cycling, increase road safety
for cyclists and promote safer cycling practice.
You can view the cycling strategy for Kent in our Local Transport
Plan.
How do we decide where a new cycle route will be?
We work closely with each district council to plan improvements
to the cycle network.
We plan routes so cyclists can reach places safely and easily
and link residential areas to key destinations such as:
- town centres
- railway stations
- bus stations
- schools
- workplaces
- shops
- other popular facilities, such as leisure centres or
parks.
What are we doing to make cycling safer?
Safety is the most important factor when we plan and provide a
new cycle route. We work closely with schools, district councils
and others to develop safer routes to schools, colleges and
universities.
If there are a number of accidents that involve cyclists in a
particular area, we will identify the problem and make any
necessary safety improvements.
We also offer cyclist safety training to all year 6 students in
the Kent.
Working with cyclists
We have strong partnerships with local and national cycling
organisations such as Spokes, Cyclists' Touring Club, Sustrans and
British Cycling.
There are a number of cycle forums around Kent so you can work
with district councils and us to improve the cycle network. There
are established cycle forums in Maidstone, Thanet and Shepway. We
would like to see one in each district.
