M20 Junction 4 Eastern Overbridge

M20 Junction 4, Leybourne Eastern over bridge widening

The A228 is a strategic route between the Isle of Grain and the A21 at Tunbridge Wells.

The A228 runs along the Medway Valley which is a major development corridor with many homes under construction or planned such as at Holborough and Peter's Village, Wouldham.

M20 Junction 4 is a key connection of the A228 with the motorway network.

The scheme will provide extra carriageway space on the junction gyratory system.  It will be funded by contributions from developers and from Local Growth Funding provided by the Department of Transport to the South East Local Enterprise Partnership.

The scheme includes:

  • widening of the eastern bridge over the M20 to provide an extra traffic lane (from 2 lanes to 3 lanes)
  • minor changes to the top of the east facing slip roads to accommodate the widened bridge
  • traffic signal control will be retained.

The scheme objectives are:

  • reduced congestion
  • improved operation of the junction
  • improved safety.
