Kent Freedom Pass

Free bus travel in Kent for young people in year 7-11. Read about the future of the Kent Freedom Pass.

  • Apply or renew

    Apply online if you are in year 7 to 11 and pay £100 for the pass.

    If you get a discount you need to download the application form (PDF, 1.5 MB).

    Send your form with a photo and payment to: Transport Integration, Aylesford Highways Depot, St. Michael's Close, Aylesford ME20 7TZ.

    When you can apply

    Apply by 30 May 2014 for academic year 2013/14. If you apply late your pass may not be ready for the first day of term.

    Renew your Kent Freedom Pass

    You need to renew your child’s pass each year.

    You’ll need the pass number and the email address you used to register.

    You can renew online if:

    • your child’s in year 7  - 11 (or put forward to year 12 but would normally be in year 11)
    • you pay £100 for your pass
    • you haven’t changed your details.

    Renew by post

    Use the Kent Freedom Pass renewal form (PDF, 1.6 MB) if:

    • you qualify for a discount
    • you don’t have a credit or debit card.

    You don’t need to send a new photo.

    Change of details

    If you’ve moved house or your child has changed school since you applied last year and haven’t told us, please email kentfreedompass@kent.gov.uk before renewing online.

    Non-Kent residents

    If your child goes to school in Kent but you’re not a Kent resident they can’t get a Kent Freedom Pass. Please contact your local council.

  • Cost

    Once you’ve paid for your pass, bus travel is free. The cost of the pass is the same regardless of when you apply.

    Standard fee - £100

    Students on free school meals - £50

    In care and care leavers - free (you must get your application endorsed)

    Young carers - free (you must get your application endorsed)

    Getting your application endorsed

    If you're in care, a care leaver or a young carer you must get your application endorsed or you’ll end up paying the standard £100. Find out who to contact below.

    In care or care leavers

    Year 7-11: ask your case worker to arrange for someone to endorse your application.

    Year 11 and above: Catch 22 (formerly Rainer Kent Services) must endorse your application.

  • Collecting your pass

    Your child can collect their pass from school. We don’t send passes to your home.

    It should be ready for the first day of term if you applied or renewed on time.

    We’ll write to you before the end of the summer holidays to let you know your pass is ready. If you haven’t received your letter 1 week before term begins please email kentfreedompass@kent.gov.uk.

    Pass not at school

    If your child’s pass wasn’t at the school as expected, please contact us with your email  with your child’s name, date of birth and school.

    Email us on kentfreedompass@kent.gov.uk or call 0300 333 5540 (Monday – Friday, 9am - 5pm).

    Late applications

    If you apply or renew late you’ll need to wait up to 28 days for us to send the pass to your child’s school.

    We don’t refund fares your child pays whilst waiting for their pass to arrive or write letters they can show the driver.

     
  • Using your pass

    You can use your pass any day of the week on buses in Kent.

    Use Traveline or 11-19travel to plan your bus journey.

    Outside of Kent: you can use your pass to travel to counties bordering Kent as long as the journey starts or ends in Kent.

    Medway: you can’t use your pass to make journeys from one Medway address to another Medway address.

    We can take passes away from anyone who doesn’t stick to this code.

    Special school services

    You need to pay extra on some special school services. See a list of special school services.

  • Lost, stolen or damaged

    To get a replacement pass please contact us with your child’s name, address and school.

    Cost: £10 per replacement

    Pay: by debit or credit card if you call us. Or send us a cheque or postal order with your child’s name, address and school (made payable to Kent County Council).

    You can have 3 replacement passes per school year.

    Temporary passes

    We’ll send a temporary pass to your home for your child to show the driver whilst you’re waiting for your replacement.

    We’ll send the replacement pass to the school before the temporary one runs out.
