In response to a consultation exercise with carers, service users and parents in the Canterbury and Thanet districts during 2004, Adult Services are developing a range of new services for the provision of short break respite for carers.
Currently short-break respite care has been provided from Crispe House in Birchington. The condition and fabric of Crispe House is in a poor state of repair which would require significant capital investment if it is to be a modern 'fit for purpose' facility. It barely meets the minimum requirements for the environmental standards within the statutory regulations for Care Homes for Younger Adults.
The current mixture of service provision for adults with physical disabilities and for those with learning disabilities within the same building is no longer a preferred service model.
In February 2006 Member approval was given for Crispe House to be closed and for services to be re-provided within the community.
Copies of consultation documents and reports relating to the closure of Crispe House are provided for public reference.
