2001 Census Bulletins - Activity Rates

Booklet

Activity Rates

Activity rates reflect the proportion of the population aged 16 and over who are available for work. (i.e. the resident workforce). The 2001 Census confirms that male activity rates continue to fall, while female rates are on the increase.

  • The East Kent districts of Canterbury, Dover, Shepway and Thanet have lower activity rates than the rest of Kent

  • Activity rates among those aged 16 to 24 reflect the numbers staying on in full-time education. The rate rises significantly amongst the 24 to 44 age group. The level of activity rates drop slightly among those aged 45 to 49, then fall by almost half for those aged 60 to 64. A relatively small number of people remain economically active aged 65 and over

  • Overall, just over 61% of Kent's residents aged 16 and over are Economically Active. This includes the people of Medway.

The Census is carried out every ten years. The 2001 Census was conducted on 29 April 2001 by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) for the whole of England and Wales. The data collected from a census is useful in planning services and resources throughout the whole decade, despite seeming out of date to many already.
