2001 Census bulletins for Kent - Ethnic Diversity and Religion

Document

An analysis of the ethnic diversity , race and religion, of the people of Kent, based on results from the 2001 Census

  • Kent County, which includes Medway, has a total population of 1,579,206, of which 3.5% (54,957 people) classify themselves as belonging to a Black Minority Ethnic (BME) group (non-white)

  • Within the Kent County Council (KCC) Area, which does not include Medway, 41,534 people (3.1%) classify themselves as non-white

  • Within the KCC Areas, the majority of the population is of Christian religion (75.13%). The next largest religious group is Sikh with 0.6%. However, larger by far is 14.9% of the KCC population who state that they have no religion.

The Census is carried out every ten years. The 2001 Census was conducted on 29 April 2001 by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) for the whole of England and Wales.

The data collected from a census is useful in planning services and resources throughout the whole decade, despite seeming out of date to many already.

The Office for National Statistics now provide annual ethnicity estimates by age and gender.
