2001 Census Bulletins - Housing: Dwelling and Tenure

Booklet

Housing: Dwelling and Tenure

An analysis of Kent's housing stock based on results from the 2001 Census. This includes an analysis of dwelling type, tenure, vacancy and access to residential amenities.

  • Within the Kent County Council (KCC) Area, which does not include Medway, there are 546,742 households. Of these households 73.6% are owner occupied and 26.4% are rented

  • 83.5% of KCC residents live in a house or bungalow, compared with 15.9% that live in a flat, maisonette or apartment

  • 0.6% of KCC residents (3,299 people) live in a caravan or other mobile or temporary structure.

The Census is carried out every ten years. The 2001 Census was conducted on 29 April 2001 by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) for the whole of England and Wales.

The data collected from a census is useful in planning services and resources throughout the whole decade, despite seeming out of date to many already.
