Is adoption an option for you?

25 October 2011

Brett is a six-year-old waiting to be adopted in Kent. He is a sociable little boy who makes friends easily, has a great sense of humour, loves football and collecting toy cars. He desperately wants a family and to have a mum and dad who will let him keep a rabbit.

He is one of the children in the county looking for a permanent loving family as Kent County Council is wholeheartedly backing National Adoption Week from 31 October to 6 November. The aim is to encourage people who are considering adopting a child or children to come forward and find out more.

KCC is looking for adopters from different backgrounds; single people and couples in long-term relationships; people with disabilities and those of any nationality, race, sexual orientation, religion and cultural background. Adoptive families are particularly needed for older children, groups of siblings and children from black and minority ethnic backgrounds.

Pam, who adopted with KCC two and a half years ago, said:

“Adopting our son has, without a doubt, been the most extraordinary and fulfilling experience of our lives. There have been challenges and difficult times but there has also been great joy, wonderful surprises and lots of love and laughter. I am hoping that those who have considered adoption as an option will come forward and take the first steps to find out more.”

KCC Cabinet Member for Specialist Children’s Services, Jenny Whittle, said:

“When you read the profiles of children like Brett, it really pulls on your heart strings. Here’s a young lad who wants nothing more than loving parents, and the chance to keep a pet rabbit. If there are individuals or couples out there who have considered adoption, they can be sure the rewards are enormous. I cannot emphasise the difference you will be making to the children’s lives as well as your own. Please get in contact with us or come along to an information event.”

Anyone interested in adoption, can attend an information event on Saturday 12 November from 10.30am to 3.30pm at the Hilton Hotel Maidstone, or Wednesday 23 November from 6.30pm to 8.30pm at Canterbury Christ Church University. People who have adopted will be on hand for a chat and to answer any questions.
