New ways to report hate incidents

3 June 2011

Kent Police and partner agencies are providing more ways to report hate incidents for people being bullied, harassed or verbally abused because of their race, religion, disability, sexuality or gender identity.

While victims of hate incidents are always encouraged to contact Kent Police directly in the first instance (101 for non-urgent issues or 999 in an emergency), research shows that some people may be reluctant to make contact with the police directly.

If this is the case there is another way to get help. A new reporting line is now available.

Hate incident reporting line 0800 138 1624

The new line is staffed 24 hours a day, 7 days a week by specially-trained non-police staff who can deal with each call or refer it to the most appropriate agency. The number is free to call from landlines.

How the new line can help

Detective Superintendent Jon Sutton, Head of Crime and Intelligence at Kent Police said:

'We take all reports of hate incidents extremely seriously. It can have a devastating effect not only on victims, but also families and communities.

'We want victims to know they have a voice, they will be listened to, and will have a say in the outcome for those perpetrating this type of abuse.'

Offenders can be dealt with in a number of ways. These can range from harassment warning, caution or mediation meetings (if appropriate and favoured by the victim), to court appearances and possible imprisonment. Kent Police can also work with landlords and other agencies to improve the quality of life for victims, and in dealing with offenders.

Report hate incidents with confidence

Detective Superintendent Sutton continued:

'Kent Police wants victims to come forward and report these type of incidents, so that we can bring offenders to account for their actions. We want anyone who suffers this type of crime to be able to report it. It is important that victims know they can report with confidence, and have a say in how each incident is dealt with.'

In recent weeks call-handlers for the new reporting line, who treat calls with sensitivity and discretion, have received updated training to ensure that they are able to handle all hate crime incidents reported to them.

Report it

Never before has there been so many ways in Kent to report hate incidents. Not only can victims or witnesses ring the hate incident reporting line on 0800 138 1624, but any incident, including hate incidents can be reported to Kent Police on 101.

The True Vision online reporting facility is another option for reporting hate incidents.
