The Kent Outdoor
Pursuits Project was set up in 2005 to increase the
opportunities for disabled people to take part in outdoor
activities and to enjoy Kent's countryside. Over 2,500 people
were involved in the first year alone.
The main aim is to remove the barriers which may prevent people
with impairments from experiencing the outdoors, to allow them to
enjoy activities with friends and family.
These include cycling, walking, sailing, archery, climbing and
access to country parks.
Linked with the Kent Sports Development Unit (link opens in a
new window), the project provides advice and works with a number of
people who are expert in their specialised sports to help encourage
those with disabilities to take part in sport and to develop their
confidence and skills through physical activities.
Many groups which have worked with the project aim to provide
health benefits to their members and to help with physiotherapy
treatments through the use of sporting activities.
Through the project funding, around £40,000 has been awarded to
local projects to help develop facilities and purchase adapted
sports equipment. These include the Step Forward Disabled Cycling
Club in Minnis Bay, Thanet and the addition of an all-terrain
Tramper vehicle for use at Bedgebury
Pinetum. |
