National Year of Reading

25/04/2008

2008 National Year of Reading

Children surrounded by booksWhether it's novels, newspapers or websites that interest you, now is the perfect time to discover the joys of reading.

2008 is the National Year of Reading (link opens in a new window) and this fantastic celebration aims to inspire a greater national passion for reading.

We want to help everyone in Kent discover a love of reading and throughout the year we will be organising a range of fun activities and events to inspire people to read more.

There are lots of simple ways that you can get involved in the National Year of Reading. We have put together a list of ideas that we hope will inspire you to take part and enjoy reading:

  • visit your library, or join online. Find out more about Kent's libraries
  • start up a book group in your workplace or community
  • read a story with your children when you get home from work
  • borrow a talking book from a local library and listen to stories in your car on the way to work
  • brush up on your literacy skills. Our adult education team can help
  • become a Time2Give Volunteer and help promote reading in our libraries or deliver books to someone who is housebound

The National Year of Reading was launched in Kent on Monday 21 April. During the launch event, held at council offices in Maidstone, local school children explored some great places to read, including on the sofa and in bed.

Why not find your great place to read and join us in celebrating the National Year of Reading.

National Join a Library Day

Man reading in libraryLibraries across Kent welcomed lots of new members during the national 'Join a Library Day' on Saturday 26 April.

Don't worry if you missed it, you can join your local library throughout the year and enjoy the luxury of having thousands of books at your fingertips.

However, it's not just books Kent's libraries have to offer, they are also home to a wide range of other resources and services including events, workshops and access to films, music and the internet.

It is easy to become a library member: simply visit your local library or complete the online membership form.

As well as opening up a world of excitement and information, joining your local library is also a great way to take part in the 2008 National Year of Reading.
