Residents in Maidstone are invited to have their say on
the services for older people at the next meeting of Kent County
Council's
Maidstone Local Board.
The meeting, at 7pm on Tuesday 15 July at Marden Memorial Hall,
Goudhurst Road, Marden, focuses on the Strategy for Later Life and
its aim to support the people of Kent to have a fulfilled,
independent and healthy old age.
KCC has a responsibility to promote the welfare of all adults in
Kent, not just those who receive social services, so the strategy
is a way to begin promoting the value of older people. For too long
there has been a negative image of old age and the 'burden on
society' some perceive it to be. In reality many older people are
carers and volunteers who make up the backbone of local
communities.
The strategy will promote the positives which far outweigh the
negative perceptions of older people, and with the recent changes
in Health and Social Services it will give people the chance to
comment about future services and how these should be shaped.
Also on the agenda is a presentation on the proposed
Kent History Centre, which will be built on the corner of the
James Whatman Way and Royal Engineers Road. It will be the new home
of one of the biggest county archives in the country and combined
with a stunning new library in the heart of Maidstone.
Activities to celebrate the National Year of Reading will also
be highlighted.
Chairman of KCC Maidstone Local Board Paulina Stockell said: "It
is a varied agenda and I hope people will take the time to join us
and help shape the Strategy for Later Life. With more and more
people living longer, it is important that people's later years
continue to be independent, rewarding and fulfilling.
"The plans for the Kent History Centre are very exciting. If
you've not seen them, then do come along and find out more. This
will be a stunning building and facility and I'm proud that it will
be located in the county town."
There is an opportunity for an informal chat with KCC Members
from 6.30pm before the meeting starts at 7pm. For more information,
