Kent residents are invited to lose themselves in centuries
of history and culture at a day of events and demonstrations that
will explore the county's past.
Kent History Sunday, which is being held at the Museum of Kent
Life in Maidstone on Sunday 7 September from 10am, will include
stalls, displays and talks on topics including hop picking, local
archaeology, folk music and papermaking.
The emphasis will be on interactivity and there will be plenty
of opportunities for families, young people and adults to have a go
at dressing up in period costume, map making and storytelling.
Throughout the day there will also be a number of talks by
historians and authors including Stewart Ross who has written
children's books on pirates, and Ancient Rome, and from KCC's
Heritage Conservationist Andrew Mayfield who will talk about recent
local archaeological finds.
KCC Cabinet Member for Community Services
Mike
Hill said: "Our county's heritage is rich in traditional crafts
and techniques, and full of fascinating stories and dramatic
events. This event is an excellent opportunity for local people to
learn more about where they live in an interactive and creative
way."
KCC's Archive and Local History Manager Stuart Bligh added: "An
important aspect of this event is that it will highlight the way
that local communities get involved in preserving and investigating
their own history. Some local history groups and societies will be
at Kent History Sunday and we are keen to encourage and help more
people to get involved in creating similar organisations in their
area."
Tickets can be booked in advance by calling Maidstone Tourist
Information Centre on 01622 602169 or bought on the day itself.
There is a reduced admission charge for library members and history
society members who should present their ID card upon arrival.
