Students and parents from Dover were able to
find out all about the highly successful
Kent Freedom Pass when the roadshow bus visited Dover's Market
Square on Thursday 28 August.
Members of
Kent Youth County Council - who pressed for the bus pass for
under 16s - were on hand to answer questions along with council
officials and representatives from bus operator Stagecoach.
Kent is the first County Council in the country to introduce the
scheme, which allows young people at secondary school in years 7-11
free bus travel anytime, anywhere - for an annual £50 advance
payment. More than 8,000 young people have already got the pass
which they are using around 200,000 times a month.
The scheme is being progressively rolled out to other schools in
Kent after the successful trial in Canterbury, Tunbridge Wells and
Tonbridge.
KCC Cabinet Member for Environment, Highways and Waste
Keith
Ferrin said: "I am pleased that parents and students throughout
the Dover district can now benefit from the Kent Freedom Pass. It
has been an all-round success so far, giving young people more
flexibility to travel, as well as reducing congestion and
pollution." |
