People in Britain are living longer than ever before and
the population is also ageing.
These trends will have a large effect on the future of council
services, the economy and family life, and it is important that we
plan and prioritise for the impact they will have.
In order to address some of these issues and begin a wider
debate on the topic, we hosted a seminar on 'Ageing Population and
the Economy' at County Hall on Friday 2 May.
The seminar touched upon a wide range of issues and council
services including employment, leisure and health.
Several internationally renowned speakers gave presentations on
key areas. The speakers included:
- Denis Gilhooly, Principal Advisor, United Nations Office for
Partnerships
- Simon Cavelle, Director, KLC School of Design
- Madeleine Starr, Action for Carers and Employment (ACE
National)
- Professor Sue Yeandle, School of Sociology & Social Policy,
University of Leeds

The morning ended with a panel discussion on some of the
important issues that were raised throughout the event.
