The Kent Approach to Literacy and Reading

Words associated with literacy

Literate communities are vital to the success of Kent, its residents and its economy.

The Kent Approach to Literacy and Reading (PDF, 153k) is our plan to achieve 100% literacy in Kent and we believe that everyone in the community has a role to play.

Improving literacy supports all three of our Bold Steps for Kent aims:

  • helping the economy to grow
  • putting the citizen in control
  • tackling disadvantage

We recognise the great work already being done by our teachers, tutors and librarians to raise literacy levels across Kent. The Kent Approach does not seek to advise on how literacy should be taught, but aims to engage people who could benefit most from improving their literacy. This includes parents of young children, people who are seeking work, and people who suffer from mental health problems.
