Museums in Kent

There are over 70 museums and heritage organisations in Kent (not including the numerous local history societies and similar groups - for more information on these, see the Archive pages). They are governed and managed by various Charitable Trusts, Local Authorities and Military Departments. Around 50 of these are Accredited Museums.

The Museum Accreditation Scheme sets nationally agreed standards for museums, and museum-managed art galleries in the United Kingdom. To qualify, museums must meet clear basic requirements on how they care for and document their collections, how they are governed and managed, and on the information and services they offer to their users.

We are not listing non-accredited museums on these pages as we cannot vouch for the level or quality of service provided. Museums wishing to go ahead with the accreditation process should contact ACE (Arts Council England).
