Overdue charges

We have recently reviewed our fees and charges, and the following changes (PDF, 175kb) will come into effect from 1 December 2011.

Returning borrowed items on time helps to make the best use of the service for everybody's benefit. All items are stamped with the date when they are due for return.

To avoid paying overdue charges (PDF, 360kb) you only need to return or renew items before they become overdue. Many of our libraries have external 'book bins' for you to use when the library is closed.

We are anxious to ensure the return of our books and other stock so that they can be enjoyed by all of our customers. So we are going to be working with a company called Unique Management Services (UMS), a specialist firm that has worked with more than 1,100 library authorities in the UK and abroad, to recover unreturned books and other items, as well as unpaid fines.

Please note:

  • customers with visual impairments or other disabilities which prevent them using the book lending service are exempt from overdue charges
  • if you borrow items from a Mobile Library, you will be charged for hire and late return of videos, but there are no overdue charges for books
  • you will be required to pay for the cost of postage on any overdue reminder sent to you (those sent by email do not incur a charge).
