Local and family history
There
are local history collections accessible throughout the
Kent Libraries & Archives network and the 15 largest
libraries in the county provide a focus for history locally through
their collections.
These collections are a wonderfully rich local history
resource which are readily accessible in your local area. They
cover defined geographical areas and include a huge variety of
material including books, newspapers, maps, census returns, subject
files, directories, photographs and memorabilia. Larger collections
such as that at Folkestone Library have a dedicated room within the
library whereas smaller ones, like Ashford Library's, are a
significant part of the reference area.
All Kent libraries and archives centres provide free access to
the Ancestry.com (library edition) on their
computers and other resources are available to use remotely via
this website with your Kent Library ticket.
Collections are
generally for reference use only but lending copies of some of the
books are available. Access to local studies resources is available
during
library opening hours although you may need to book in advance
to use facilities such as microfilm readers or computers. Staff
trained in the use of local studies resources are available to
assist with your enquiry and research.
Research service
If you are unable to visit the library in person we may do a
very limited amount of free enquiry work via phone, fax, letter or
e-mail. We can do more in depth research - depending on staff
availability - for a fee (£14 per half hour), or we could put you
in touch with a local researcher who may be able to carry out the
work on your behalf. Ask a local member of staff for more
details.
Kent also counts a number of family history societies that may
assist you in your search for that elusive ancestor. Details of
those can be found on the Kent Family History Society
website.
