Language and citizenship
Foreign language provision
Our libraries provide books and some audio visual items for
adults and children in a wide range of languages. You can check the
extent of our holdings online.
Some libraries have permanent collections of books in community
languages. Ask at
your local library to find out what is available.
If we do not have books in your language of choice please ask a
member of staff and we will try to supply them.
Also available are:
- dictionaries. We now provide some foreign language dictionaries online.
- language-learning courses, including CDRoms
- bilingual video and audio tapes on health matters
- talking books in some languages
- dual language children's books
- books in English, on topics such as world cultures, race
relations, citizenship, religions
- many of our online resources now
provide translation for their content and/or interface
- items for asylum seekers and refugees
- world music and films on CD, video and DVD in some libraries
and online
(via NAXOS)
- we can provide collections of books in community languages to
day centres, hospitals and other community organisations.
English as a second language
Libraries have books to help you pass English language exams
such as
IELTS (International English Language Testing
System). Look in the RaW Skills collection at your local library
for graded readers published by
Macmillan,
Cambridge and
Penguin.
