Herne Mill

Herne Mill

Herne Mill is a Grade I listed property and overlooks Herne village.

It is an early type of smock mill and was built in 1789 to replace a 16th century post mill, which had been on the same site.

In 1856, the wooden structure was raised and 2 storeys of brickwork constructed underneath, so that the mill could take greater advantage of the south-west winds.

The windmill finished working as a mill in 1980 and was taken over by Kent County Council in 1985. It was restored to working order in 1999 after extensive renovations, including the sweeps and stocks which had been removed in 1996.

Herne Mill is open to the public and is currently looked after by the Friends of Herne Mill.

Location

  • Off Mill Lane, Herne. From the A291 (Herne Bay to Canterbury), turn into School Lane on reaching Herne Village. The windmill is then signposted from the bottom of Mill Lane.
