West Hythe to Hythe walk

Walk information
There are two routes: 1.9 miles (3km) or 4 miles (6.4km)
This accessible walk offers two routes of different lengths
along mainly flat hard fine surfaces in this memorable part of the
county. This walk is part of the popular Walks For All
leaflets series.
Both routes enable visitors to explore a stretch of the famous
Royal Military Canal,
which was built to defend the coast against invasion from
Napoleon's Army. Fortunately, it was never called into action.
Today,
the canal, a listed monument, is a popular destination for walkers
and anglers and a haven for wildlife. It also plays an essential
role in the drainage system of the marshes.
Toilets are available at information point two, however the
adapted toilets are only accessible during opening times.
Let off some steam
The walk also passes the world famous Romney, Hythe and Dymchurch Light
Railway - a must for all visitors to Kent. While the one-third
scale steam and diesel engines offer scenic tours of the unique
landscape of Romney Marsh, it is also an important service for
local schoolchildren.
The railway, the dream of millionaire racing drivers, Captain
J.E.P. Howey and Count Louis Zborowski, was built in the 1920s and
later extended to its current route, which runs to Dungeness.
