Royal Military Canal walk - Credit James StewartThe canal was built to protect England from the possible invasion of Napoleon's troops, with construction of the canal beginning in 1804.

Today, the canal is a great place to walk and enjoy the surrounding scenery and wildlife.

The variety of wildlife attracted to the area has led to sections of the canal being designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest, and a Site of Nature Conservation Interest.
