Savour the excellent views of the undulating chalk downland and
the impressive coastline along these routes in the Kent Downs Area of Outstanding
Natural Beauty.
The journey takes you through beautiful farmland and over hills
near the villages of St Margaret's-at-Cliffe and Kingsdown. There
are many chalkland flowers to be seen along the bridleways, while a
variety of butterflies are found in the open grassland areas during
the summer months.
The Freedown routes comprise five loops with three access
links, providing rides of up to 10 miles.
The ride passes close to Walmer
Castle, which dates from the 16th century. The castle formed
part of a line of defence along the edge of the Downs. Now owned by
English Heritage, the
castle is home to a collection of memorabilia from the Duke of
Wellington.
Limited pay parking is available for horseboxes and trailers at
Owl House Stables in St Margaret's-at-Cliffe.
If you wish to park your box or trailer at this site,
please contact them on 01304 852035 beforehand to make
arrangements.
Some parking is also available at St Margaret's-at-Cliffe, in
lay-bys along the B2058, Station Road and B2058, Dover Road, and on
an area of land to the south east and adjacent to Kingsdown
Road.
