About the area:Riding through Freedown

The journey takes you through beautiful farmland and over hills near the villages of St Margaret's-at-Cliffe and Kingsdown. There are many chalkland flowers to be seen along the bridleways, while a variety of butterflies are found in the open grassland areas during the summer months.

The routes pass close to Walmer Castle, which dates from the 16th century. The castle formed part of a line of defence along the edge of the Downs. Now owned by English Heritage, the castle is home to a collection of memorabilia from the Duke of Wellington.
