Geocaching Competition

Have a go at Geocaching with Explore Kent and win some fabulous
prizes.
We have an iPhone 4S worth £500 and 25
Kent Attraction Passes worth £200 each up for grabs. (Prizes kindly
funded by Visit Kent)
Geocaching is an exciting, high-tech
treasure hunt using a Smartphone (such as an iPhone) or a GPS
device. Instead of a treasure map, you use online clues to find
thousands of real hidden containers called caches, all across the
world.
You can even have a go without a Smartphone or GPS device as
some caches can be found just by using the description and hints
online. It’s a great way of exploring new and familiar places in an
exciting way.
Caches
are waterproof containers often filled with inexpensive treasures
you can exchange and a logbook to record that you found the cache.
There are probably some caches hidden near you right now, just a
few metres away!
Win fantastic prizes!
Every entry will be included in a free prize draw to win an
iPhone 4S worth £500 with the official Geocaching.com iPhone
app worth £5.99. Also up for grabs are 25 Kent Attraction Passes
worth £200 each that offer free entry to some of Kent’s biggest
attractions including Dover Castle, Go Ape! at Bedgebury and
Dickens World. (Prizes kindly funded by Visit Kent)
Competition starts: 25 July 2011
Competition ends: 31 March 2012

Top tips for beginners
- When choosing what caches to look for check the difficulty
and terrain star rating on geocaching.com. Some maybe more suitable
for small children and pushchairs.
- It maybe helpful to check the comments as there maybe hints on
where to look and if there are a series of 'did not find' logs the
cache may have gone missing.
- As some caches go missing from time to time or in
case you cannot find the cache (because it is so well hidden!)
we suggest you pick three or four caches to look for
before you set out.
- Take a pen to sign the logbook.
- Be sneaky! Geocachers must find and hide the cache without
giving away its location to 'muggles'. 'Muggle' is the affectionate
term used within the hobby for a non-geocacher. You could
take a black plastic bag to pretend you are litter picking for
example.
- In busy areas you may need to time your visit carefully to
avoid crowds.
- If you don't have a GPS device or smartphone, you maybe
able to find some caches which have very
good descriptions and hints. A grid reference is also provided for each
cache so you can use an Ordnance Survey map to find the cache
location.
