John Downton Awards 2010
This exhibition is held annually to encourage and
celebrate the creativity of the county’s young artists.
Students at Kent's schools and colleges were invited to
participate, and the best examples of their painting and drawing
submissions were exhibited at County Hall in Maidstone. The
exhibition commemorates the life and work of John Downton, the
celebrated Kent artist, poet and philosopher.
The work was judged by an experienced
panel:
- Mike Hill OBE, KCC Cabinet Member for
Community Services;
- Mike Addison, Associate Dean of Further
Education at UCA;
- Matthew de Pulford, Curator at Herbert Read
Gallery; and
- Edda Venusia Jones, emerging Kent based
artist and director of Remade in Dover.
In coming to their decisions the judges
spent a day discussing and
debating the merits of each individual piece exhibited. The
winners were announced
at an awards evening held on November 11th.
