Ian Wynne was born in Tonbridge in 1973.

He started canoeing at Tonbridge Canoe Club when he was nine years old; then trained with the Monson Swimming Club at Tunbridge Wells and, as a teenager, represented Great Britain in swimming championships.

At the 2004 European Championships he gained a Silver medal K1 500m and Bronze medal K2 1000m. At the Olympics of the same year he arrived for the K1 500m final on crutches, having sprained his ankle in a fall while stepping off a bus the previous evening.  Nevertheless, he gained a Bronze medal.

In 2007 he set a new record for crossing the English Channel in a canoe, and in October 2011, helped his young protégé, Paul Wycherley, to beat his record and raise over £100,000 for charity.

He is currently Great Britain Canoe Sprint Olympic Programme Technical Coach, providing individualised coaching support to nominated Great Britain Canoeing Olympic Programme athletes.
