History collections

The Kent History and Library Centre provides a new and exciting hub for Kent’s history and culture. For the first time all of KCC’s archive collections will be available under one roof offering people in Kent an amazing resource for looking into the past. Records available include:

  • baptisms, marriages and burials beginning in 1538
  • trials and courts back to the 1300s
  • families, estates and manors back to the 13th Century
  • maps beginning in the 1500s
  • photographs and prints from the 19th Century onwards.

To find out more search our online catalogue. If you want to search any of the records you find you’ll need to make a note of the finding number and then get in contact with us.

For further information and guidance go to Starting your research.

There are also very good collections of local history material in your local area at the main district libraries. This material could include censuses, photographs, maps, newspapers, ephemera and books. You can search for a lot of this material using the local history section of the online libraries catalogue or contact your local library.Searching archives

Many local history groups and museums also hold historic material that could be useful for your research. For information relating to the Medway area please contact the Medway Archives and Local Studies Centre and for information on Canterbury Cathedral visit the Canterbury Cathedral Archives website.

We are always willing to consider accepting new documents and collections. Please see our collecting statement for further information.
