Canterbury Cathedral Archives

Canterbury Cathedral Archives is administered by the Dean and
Chapter of Canterbury and Kent County Council. It also operates as
the record office for Canterbury City Council and Diocesan Record
Office for Canterbury.
Canterbury Cathedral Archives is located within the precincts of
Canterbury Cathedral. Please contact
the centre prior to any visit.
The partnership agreement between KCC, the Dean and Chapter
and Canterbury City Council to run the Cathedral Archives will end
on 29 February 2012 after 21 years. After this date the
Dean and Chapter will be responsible for running the archive
and they announced that the Cathedral Archives will close for
repair and renovation works on 31st January 2012. This work is
likely to take 7 months after which the D&C anticipate opening
the archives to the public again.
Most of the collections currently held by the Canterbury
Archives will remain there as they are owned by the Dean &
Chapter, Canterbury Diocese and the City Council.
The partners are keen to continue to work together in the future
particularly through the redevelopment of the Beaney
Institute and also the new Kent History and Library Centre due
to open in Maidstone in Spring 2012.
