Library IT refresh

We would like to thank everyone for their patience while we have
been making changes to our computer system. We are well on the way
to resuming normal service and customers, in the libraries where
the upgrade has been completed, are noticing a real difference in
speed when logging in and using the internet.
The new library software is in use in all but 3 small libraries
and we are resuming normal service with notifications for reserved
items and overdue reminders. Our apologies for any extended waiting
time you may have had for requested items during the transition. As
with any new system there are likely to be a few minor teething
problems, our supplier is working closely with us to reduce any
impact on you.
The new web catalogue
is online and we have had encouraging comments from customers who
are using it. In addition to a range of quick and advanced
catalogue searches, you can join, check your personal details,
check your loans, and renew and reserve items online.
You can also:
- create a 'Savedlist' from a search. This remains on the system
for one day, after which it is cleared;
- create an 'Alert Profile' to match your preferences. If any new
works are added which fit your profile, you will be sent an email
with brief details and a link to the catalogue entry. You can then
place a reservation if you wish;
- add a review to share your views about a book, film or music,
with other people.
Please note: You may need to modify your computer
shortcut/bookmark to reflect the change of our online catalogue web
address to
https://kent.spydus.co.uk.
Updating the hardware
The large number of libraries in Kent means we are still working
our way through upgrading the computer equipment, but all libraries
will be upgraded by the end of June.
The benefits customers are seeing where we have completed the
upgrade are:
- higher specification PCs that work faster
- larger 19 inch screens to help customers and staff work more
easily
- improved log in times for the PC booking system
- more reliable and energy efficient printers and PCs.
We've asked library users in Dover and Ramsgate what they think
about the changes to our IT :
91% of people surveyed said that our new computers are easy to
use
84% thought that the new software is suited to their needs; the
same number agreed it was easy to use
98% of people use our computers to access the internet and 53% for
email
The future
The next phase of our improvement programme includes adding
accessibility hardware and software and connecting the last few
small libraries and our mobile library fleet to the computer
network.
During the next couple of months we will be testing and
installing hardware and software which caters for a range of needs
including tools for the visually impaired, for people with
Dyslexia, and those with physical disabilities.
During June and July, Ash, Vigo and St Margaret's libraries will
move from the ticket system to the computerised network.
Connecting the mobile libraries is a very complex task, so we
are starting with a test programme in Ashford, which should enable
the mobile library to replicate the service available in a static
library. The results of this test will be used to inform our plans
to connect the rest of the mobile fleet, but we hope to have them
all connected in July.
Walk with Turner & Dickens
Following feedback from local residents, a
historic walking route between Margate and Broadstairs has
been revived. Based on a centuries old footpath between St
John's Church in Margate and St Peter's Church in Broadstairs,
the route has been extended to connect two of Thanet's famous
visitors from the past - Turner and Dickens.
The new Turner & Dickens route links the site of the Turner
Contemporary Gallery in Margate to the Dickens House Museum in
Broadstairs. The development of the footpath has been led by Kent
Highways Services, working closely with Thanet District
Council.
The route , which will be fully signposted and complete from the
summer, has been made accessible to disabled users and pupils from
two schools along the route have helped to design and install
commemorative mosaic artwork. An opening ceremony and event are
planned for the end of June.
