Libraries and Archives collect a constantly growing
resource covering all aspects of Kent, past, present and future to
help you research the history of your family, house, town or
village.The materials are held in a variety of formats: some are
printed and some available on microfilm and microfiche.
Within the collections you can expect to find in our main town
centre libraries would be examples of the following:
- books and pamphlets
- directories and yearbooks
- annual Reports
- lgovernment publications, government publications of local
interest.
- newspapers and periodicals (on Kent, local and family history,
of local interest)
- maps and plans (including Ordnance Survey maps, shopping centre
plans and early printed maps).
- illustrations (including photographs, prints and
postcards).
- memorabilia (including local transport timetables).
- census Returns from 1841 - 1891 (for their area).
Main libraries produce a guide to their Local Studies
collection, which should be referred to for further
information.
In most other libraries you will find small collections, while the
County Local Studies Collection containing material covering all
aspects of the whole historic County of Kent is held at the
Centre for Kentish Studies.
Collections are generally for reference use only but lending copies
of some of the books are available.
