There are many ways to become involved in learning about, caring
for and enjoying Kent's heritage.
Kent's heritage belongs to us all. Although only a small number
of people work in the heritage profession in Kent, the
archaeological sites, historic buildings and landscapes of the
county are part of all of our lives and they tell the story of our
shared past.
Visiting an archaeological site can be an exciting experience as
you can see the past emerging before your eyes. There are many
sites in Kent that can be visited and are presented more or less as
the archaeologists found them.
From time to time there is an opportunity to visit a site during
excavation. Kent County Council has a
Community Archaeologist who organises excavations and surveys
at
Shorne Woods Country Park.
Joining a
local history or archaeology society is a great way to learn
more about the heritage of Kent and your local area in particular.
The Kent Archaeological Society organises fieldwork, lectures and
talks, and produces publications and a newsletter for its members.
Alternatively there are many sources of reading materials and a
wide range of adult education and university courses that can
help.
To learn more about your town or village you could use the
online
Historic Environment Record or visit us to use the heritage
conservation resources that we maintain. The
Kent
Archives Service can help you to carry out additional
documentary research and may have information about your family and
house.
If you think that an archaeological site or historic building is
being damaged or if you discover something that may be of historic
interest then we also have some
guidance for you. |
