Beat the credit crunch this summer

Don't let the credit crunch bite over the summer holidays, keep the kids amused with our activity suggestions that won't break the bank.

Kent's rich history, spectacular and varied coastline and stunning countryside means that there's something to suit everyone and you can plan great family days out at very low cost, or even for free!

Top ten things to do in Kent this summer

1. Pack up a picnic and head to Reculver Country Park in Thanet to explore the 12th century Reculver Towers and the remains of a Roman fort and Saxon monastery.

2. Plan a fun and educational day out at Lullingstone Country Park, near Eynsford, where kids can discover a collection of ancient trees, some of which are thought to be 800 years old.

3. Go on the hunt for rare flowers and insects at Peene Quarry Picnic Site, near Folkestone - see if your kids can spot the nationally scarce Adonis Blue butterfly.

A family cycling at Bedgebury Pinetum4. Get the bikes out and take the whole family cycling along Regional Cycle Route 12 - an almost entirely traffic free five mile route from Tonbridge Castle to Penshurst Place.

5. Go for a stroll by the river at Teston Bridge Country Park, near Maidstone - the ideal location to watch boats cruise the River Medway. It's also a great spot for a family barbeque.

6. Take a walk through some stunning woodland at Bedgebury National Pinetum and Forest (link opens in a new window), near Cranbrook, witnessing its dramatic conifers first-hand.

7. Go bird watching on the mudflats of Pegwell Bay Country Park near Sandwich.

8. For spectacular views of the beautiful Kent countryside, head to the White Horse Wood Country Park at Detling near Maidstone.

9. Explore Samphire Hoe (link opens in a new window), near Dover, the latest addition to the Kent coastline created from 4.9 million cubic metres of chalk excavated from the Channel Tunnel.

10. Fascinate the whole family with the exceptional rock formations at Dryhill Local Nature Reserve, near Sevenoaks, and search for fossils.
