Donovan Slacks - 2007
1920's Margate is a central location for this independent film about a fisherman's revolt.
Writer/Director: Kivmars Bowling
Kent Filming Locations: Margate
Filmed predominantly in Margate, with a largely local cast, Donovan Slacks tells the story of a hospital patient who discovers the bitter truth about his past and leads a fishermen’s uprising against the Government.
Donovan Slacks (Ashley Penrose), is based on the real life leader of a militant fisherman's uprising on the Kent coast in the 1920’s. Shot partly as a silent movie, partly as a talkie, it mixed Super-8 film with digital video to great effect. The movie received backing both from Screen South and the UK Film Council.
Despite working on a micro budget, the production managed to recreate 1920’s Britain complete with a cast of over 75, vintage cars, trains, bathing machines, cliff stunts, and battle scenes.
