English Woodland Grant Scheme
The Forestry Commission administers the English Woodland Grant Scheme
which is funded through the Rural Development Programme for
England. Countryside Management Partnerships can help
woodland owners apply to the eWGS and to carry out the work that it
funds.
This grant is designed specifically for woodland owners and
managers and helps to fund the creation of woodlands and
improvements to existing woodlands. The initial stage is to
register both the woodland and the owner and create a management
plan to help identify which if the funding streams are applicable
to the woodland. This work can be paid for using a Woodland
Planning Grant.
Once a management plan has been written the following grants are
available:
- Woodland Assessment Grant
- Woodland Regeneration Grant
- Woodland Improvement Grant
- Woodland Management Grant
- Woodland Creation Grant

Case study – Gorham and Admiral Wood
Deep in the heart of the Mid Kent Downs, Gorham and Admiral
Community Woodland is a fine example of chalk and gault clay
woodland containing areas of coppiced wood, high canopy and
glades. The woodland was purchased by local people who now
manage the woodland for its wildlife value and public
benefit. In order to carry out coppicing, management work in
the area of high canopy by creating rides and to re-pollarding some
of the magnificent boundary trees, Gorham wood have applied to the
eWGS. The fund will also pay for way markers and
interpretation panels to improve public enjoyment of the wood.
