Who does what?

Kent's local authorities work at 2 levels: "district or borough" and "county". Both levels have a vital role to play in dealing with Kent's waste. We work closely together to ensure high standards of service and value for money for council tax payers.

The 12 District/Borough Councils in Kent are responsible for collecting household waste. Kent County Council is then responsible for arranging disposal of this waste. Medway Council as a Unitary Authority performs both these functions for people living in the Medway area.

Kent County Council and Medway Council (link opens in a new window) also provide facilities for householders to dispose of rubbish and recyclables from their own homes directly at Household Waste Recycling Centres, of which there are 21 in Kent. Please contact Medway Council (link opens in a new window) for details of the 3 sites in their area.

Many District/Borough Councils have introduced, or may introduce, kerbside recycling schemes whereby a bin, box or sack may be supplied.

The District/Borough Councils are also responsible for placing recycling containers in public areas such as car parks.
