At many locations maritime district or unitary councils
are responsible for the coastal defences that protect land and
property from both the sea and coastal erosion.
They carry out routine maintenance, obtain new or upgraded sea
defences, and help develop coastal defence strategy plans.
Coast protection works
Coast protection works are to protect against the erosion of
natural defences which are covered by the Coast Protection Act
1949.
The Act gives the coast protection authorities (maritime
district councils) powers to carry out coast protection works to
guard against the incursion of the sea where the natural defences
are being eroded.
The cost and benefit of carrying out coast protection works is
considered carefully and action is taken where lives and property
would otherwise be threatened.
The council's involvement is purely as a part funding authority
for the works once they have been identified by the Secretary of
State as genuine coast protection works.
We have no other responsibility in this regard unless we are
identified as a coastal land owner. |
