District councils prepare emergency plans for dealing with
major incidents such as serious flooding.
They provide assistance in the form of temporary accommodation,
usually in local halls, if people are evacuated from their
homes.
They also provide advice and in some cases will offer assistance
with clearing up after the event.
Some districts will supply sandbags to help control flooding and
limit the damage it causes, although this is not always possible
when roads are flooded or blocked with traffic.
Most district councils will aim to place sandbags strategically
to contain or divert floodwater, helping as many properties as
possible.
Property owners are encouraged to make their own provisions
although some parish councils may provide assistance with the
backing of their district. |
