Energy

Here at Kent County Council we are committed to reducing our annual energy consumption through the setting of carbon reduction targets. We will reduce energy use within our estate to meet carbon reduction targets of 10% by 2010 and 20% by 2015. We have also established an 'invest to save' loan scheme to assist building managers implement efficiency measures.

The average household in Kent produces around six tonnes of CO2 annually from gas and electricity consumption. The consequences of increasingly polluting our atmosphere with CO2 emissions are profound. Higher temperatures, changes to our climate, and increased pollution are some of the knock on effects. Saving energy, and consequently saving our planet, must therefore be a high priority for all of us.

There are many simple steps we can take as households to both reduce the amount of energy we use, and to become more efficient in our energy output.

For example:

  • Adding insulation around pipework and in loft spaces will reduce some of the 40% of heat that can be lost from the home
  • Installing or replacing a new, more efficient, boiler can save 40% on household fuel bills
  • When replacing or buying new appliances always look for the energy efficient symbol; this can cut both your energy bills and environmental impact
  • Replacing old light bulbs with energy saving ones will reduce your energy costs and, as they last much longer, will save you money in the long term
  • Finally always remember SOS when you leave the room - Switch Off and Save.

  • The Energy Saving Trust (EST) is a not for profit organisation funded by the government and private sector investment. Its goals are to achieve sustainable and efficient use of energy and to cut carbon dioxide emissions, which cause the earth to heat up. For information on their 'grant finder for household energy improvements', visit the Energy Saving Trust website
  • The Kent Energy Centre offers information regarding grants and discounts on insulation and heating. They also offer an on-line energy check to see what your house needs to make it warmer and cheaper to run. Visit the Kent Energy Centre website
  • The CarbonTrust is a government-funded independent company, helping businesses and the public sector to cut carbon emissions and to exploit the potential of low carbon technologies. Visit the CarbonTrust website
  • You can see an overview of evidence, impacts and policies on climate change at the BBC Weather Centre
