Your County - Putting Kent First

Kent 4 star Council

What do we do about pollution?

There are are number of ways in which Kent County Council actively strives to reduce pollution across the region. By putting our policies into effect today we can safeguard our environment for tomorrow.

Waste

Landfilll sites cause significant damage to the environment and we have a scheme in place for monitoring closed landfill sites to lessen this impact.

One of the key objectives of the waste management service is to shift disposal methods away from the current dependence on landfill.

The aim is to switch to sustainable alternatives such as materials recovery and energy from waste.

Kent County Council and Medway Council also provide facilities for householders to dispose of waste and recyclables at household waste recycling centres.

For more information visit our waste and recycling pages.

Air pollution

Air pollution in Kent has been acknowledged as a problem for a number of years.

In order to tackle this problem the Kent and Medway air quality monitoring network was established.

For more information on the network or on air pollution levels in the county, visit the Kent and Medway air quality monitoring network website. (link opens in a new window).

All district councils are required to review air quality. For further information please contact your local office.

Kent County Council is also implementing intelligent transport systems across the county to minimise the negative effects of traffic on air quality.

Funding and grants

We make a wide range of funding opportunities and grant schemes available to community organisations, voluntary groups, and businesses to help protect, conserve and enhance the environment.

The council works with partner organisations to secure funding for Kent from major funding programmes.

Funds are then made available to local communities through small grant schemes.

Examples of this include funds made available from the European Social Fund and the Leader+ programmes.

For more information about funding schemes currently available please see our council funding opportunities information.
