Planning to preserve our heritage

The Heritage Conservation Group contributes to policy documents on how the historic environment should be safeguarded and how it can contribute positively to the world of today and tomorrow.

The historic environment is considered in the structure plan and in the districts' development plans and in Kent's environment and cultural strategies.

There are several guidance documents that are used to help steer the policy making process. These include:

The Town & Country General Development Order (1988) - This order is part of the government's planning reform agenda, which gives guidance on what should be regarded as an area of archaeological interest, and how these should be recorded.

For full details visit the Town & Country General Development Order page (link opens in a new window) of the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister website.

Planning Policy Guidance Notes

Planning policy guidance notes are used by local planning authorities to help prepare their local plans within the constraints of the legislation. The two which the group rely on most heavily for guidance are:
Guidance note 15: Planning and the historic environment (link opens in a new window)
Guidance note 16: Archaeology and planning (link opens in a new window).
