The coast boasts some of the finest heritage sites in the
country, including sites of special scientific interest.
The coastline encompasses towering cliffs, scenic marshlands and
unique estuaries.
All of these sites provide habitats for the diverse species of
plants and animals that inhabit the county.
Rising sea levels and coastal erosion are challenging these
assets.
We work in partnership with local communities and organisations
to ensure this valuable heritage is not lost.
Protecting Kent's coastal heritage
Kent County Council strives to ensure that the bountiful
heritage of Kent's coastline is preserved for the enjoyment of
future generations.
Along with regulations ensuring the coastline is protected by
law the council works with local
countryside partnerships to protect and enhance the coastal
region.
Coast Protection Act
Kent County Council shares the cost of implementing schemes to
protect against the erosion of the coast around the county with the
maritime district councils.
These councils make up the coast protection authorities in Kent
as defined by the Coast Protection Act and they have permissive
powers to promote and undertake coast protection works.
For specific queries about the act and how it is administered
please contact your local district council or Kent Highway Services
on 08458 247 800.
For general coastal issues contact Chris Drake, Kent Coastal
Officer (email:

South East Coastal Group
Kent County Council, along with other district and county
