2006
In December 2006, The Skinners School, Tunbridge Wells and
The Sweyne Junior School, Swanscombe were awarded Dragonfly
trophies as the winners of the school categories of the Kent
Environment Awards for Business. The Skinners School have helped to
develop a sensory garden for another school. The Sweyne Junior
School have created wildlife areas and an outdoor classroom. Highly
Commended certificates were awarded to Queen Elizabeth's Grammar
School, Saint George's CE School, East Farleigh Primary School,
Hever CEP and Riverview Infant School.
Eastchurch CEP was a joint winner of the first
Ashden Sustainable Energy in Schools Award in June.
Eastchurch's success recognises the tremendous amount of time
and commitment the school has put into looking after the
environment, and reducing everyone's impact on the
environment. The school will use the £10,000 prize to help
fund two wind turbines for the school. These will generate
energy and help to further reduce the school's carbon dioxide
emissions. Eastchurch CEP also became the third Kent School to
be awarded their Permanent Green Eco-Schools Flag in July
2006.
2005
Seven schools were recognised for their
environmental work at the Kent Environment Awards for Business
in December 2005. It was the first time that there was a
specific school category. Eastchurch CEP and the Cheyne Middle
School were presented with the coveted Dragonfly trophies
whilst Briary Primary School, Chevening CEP, Riverview Infant
School, Shears Green Infant School and Sheldwich Primary
School were each presented with Highly Commended certificates.
The schools were able to demonstrate measures to reduce waste,
energy and water, and had developed their school grounds and
School Travel Plans. Noticeably these schools were also
promoting the message to parents and friends about the
importance of looking after our
world.
