Why not work towards becoming a
Clean Kent School (link opens in a new window)
at the same time as you progress with Eco-Schools? The Clean Kent
School award complements the Eco-Schools awards and will support
you in covering the Litter topic.
Waste minimisation
Reducing the amount of waste produced is very important. By
composting the uneaten parts of fruit and vegetables, students can
heavily reduce the amount of waste. Plus they can create compost
for growing vegetables.
Primary schools involved in the School Fruit and Vegetable
scheme have already been offered a free composter, and further
composters can be purchased from Kent War on Waste. Read our
composting advice.
Awareness posters can be used to promote a school's recycling
scheme. A range of posters have been created to be used in schools
with primary school pupils, secondary school pupils and teachers.
These are available from RecycleNow (link opens in new window).
Help make your school litter-free and healthy by using the
Litter Free Lunches Recipe Booklet (link opens
in a new window). This will support work in school on educating
everyone about healthy lunches that do not leave lots of waste.
Library displays
Why not ask your local library if your school can create an
Eco-School display?
Pupils can create posters and other exhibits to spread the
sustainability and reponsibility message to the wider
community.They will also:
- gain pride through showing their work to a wider audience
- show the school's leadership on the issue, and demonstrate the
responsibility and skills of the pupils.
Energy and Water Loan Fund
Kent County Council's Energy Management Team manage the Energy
and Water Loan Fund. This 'invest to save' fund is part-funded by
the Carbon Trust and establishes a long-term investment strategy in
energy and water efficiency in schools and Kent County Council
buildings.
Loans are spent on projects which save electricity, gas, oil or
water, and payback within five years. The loan is interest-free and
will cover the cost of the equipment and any related installation
fees.
Around £300,000 of loans have been provided up to April 2008 for
projects such as automatic lighting controls and insulation
improvements.
If you work for Kent County Council and would like to know more
about the Energy and Water Loan Fund, please return an
expression
of interest form.
Mascalls School in Paddock Wood used the fund to buy new heating
and lighting controls. Find out more by reading their
case
study.
