Low income families and benefits

Since 2007 there have been some changes to our school transport rules for families on low income. We may be able to offer some help with school transport in the following situations.
From September 2007 primary aged children from low-income families can receive assistance if they:

  • attend their nearest appropriate school for transport purposes.
  • live between 2 - 6 miles from the school
  • receive the maximum level of Working Tax Credit
  • are entitled to free school meals.

From September 2008 secondary aged children from low-income families can receive assistance if they:

  • attend 1 of their 3 nearest appropriate schools
  • live between 2 - 6 miles from school (for denominational schools the distance must be between 2 - 15 miles)
  • receive the maximum level of Working Tax Credit are entitled to free school meals.

The two mile limit will be measured in the same way as the statutory walking distance.  However, the 6 mile upper limit and the 15 mile upper limit for denominational schools will be measured using road routes.

We will need to see evidence of your benefits when you apply, and we will review your situation every year. Evidence of receipt of benefits will be required.  Transport assistance will be reviewed on an annual basis. For further information, please contact the Transport Team.
