Information for tutors
Do you require tutors?
Kent Children’s University no longer runs courses and pays
tutors directly. All our provision will be through hub-schools.
Each hub school will have its own appointment process and pay
scales in place. You should contact the Kent Children's University
representative at each of the hubs to discover more.
Do I need a CRB (Criminal Records Bureau) check?
Each person who works for Kent Children's University in a
tutoring role (staff at Kent Children's University hubs and
external providers) must have an enhanced CRB check before
they are able to deliver Kent Children's University activities The
CRB check must be less than three years old.
How do I apply to become an External Provider, is there a
cost?
Either telephone 01622 626790 or contact us at KCU@kent.gov.uk. There is an annual
affiliation fee which is currently £50.
Does my subject have to be linked with the National
Curriculum?
No. As all our courses run outside of normal school hours we are
not restricted to offering subjects based around the National
Curriculum.
How many children will attend my course?
The maximum number of participants on any course is agreed
locally within each hub. We recommend that no more than 16 children
are placed on each course. The minimum number is six. If less than
six children apply the course will be cancelled.
How do I claim back my resource expenses?
All courses which run are allocated a resource budget which is
set locally by each hub.. It is recommended that you contact the
Kent Children's University hub lead officer and discuss this with
them. Kent Children's University no longer can provide funding from
the central pot to pay for expenses or staff time.
Can I claim for mileage?
Unfortunately we cannot pay tutor or external provider travel
expenses.
How do I get to a specific venue?
Our team does not have time to answer individual tutors requests
for directions to venues. Online resource such as Multimap,
Streetmap or Google Maps may help.
Why didn't my course run?
Courses which have fewer than six applicants are cancelled as
they are not viable for us to support.
What is the benefit in becoming an affiliated external
provider?
Any external provider which wants to be affiliated to Kent
Children's University needs to do three things:
- Complete the external provider training programme (details from
emma.jenkins@kent.gov.uk).
- Complete all the required paperwork (this relates to Criminal
Records Bureau checks, insurances and course summaries etc).
- Pay the annual fee.
If you complete the above, you will receive:
- a link on our website
- publicity which is sent to all Kent County Council
schools
- a stamp to accredit any child who participates in your sessions
with a Passport to Learning
- an official poster to display - promoting the fact you are
linked with us
- an entry in the external provider database which
clearly states you are affiliated to us. We hope that schools will
rather employ external providers who are affiliated as this will
encourage their pupils to attend as they can earn stamps for doing
so
- telephone support and guidance.
Do I need to be a qualified teacher?
No, as our courses are deemed to be Study Support we are able to
offer tutoring positions to almost anyone. You must have a valid
Criminal Records Bureau check and relevant insurance in place, and
complete a course summary document, but we can give guidance on
this if necessary.
I'm not sure how to complete the Learning Destinations
Paperwork. What should I do?
Please contact Guy Bartlett on 01622 626790. He will be able to
provide you with information about current training
opportunities.
I'm self employed. Can I invoice you for my work?
No. All external providers must receive any payments either from
the participant’s parent or schools in which they work. Kent
Children's University is no longer able to financially
support the work of external providers or host venues.
