Do's and don'ts when arranging childcare

Do

  • look for childcare solutions early - the sooner you start the more choice you have. Remember there are often waiting lists too
  • talk to other parents about what worked for them.  They'll give you a good starting point and some terms of reference to work from
  • be prepared to put in time and legwork - exploring all the options allows you to make an informed decision
  • consider your future needs - plan for stability and continuity for your child, rather than a quick fix
  • follow your instincts - good facilities, a safe environment and varied activities are crucial but how you feel about the carer is just as important
  • contact Kent Children and Families Information Service on 08000 32 32 30 for free impartial advice
  • check the Ofsted report of the childcare by accessing the Ofsted website or contacting Kent Children and Families Information Service

Don't

  • ABC wooden blockspanic and go for the first option you visit - if it seems suitable, put your child's name on the waiting list but don't commit yourself further until you've checked out what else is available
  • agree to an arrangement you won't be able to keep - if you know the hours aren't flexible enough, or you're not sure about the carer, be honest with them and yourself and look for something more suitable
  • stop looking until you're happy with your choice - be aware you may not find the perfect solution, but be prepared to be flexible and you'll avoid disappointment
