Promoting achievement of bilingual children and young people

Clusters of schools have made provision funded by the Ethnic Minority Achievement Grant to meet the needs of bilingual learners, including those learning English as an Additional Language as a beginner or advanced learners. Provision is responsive to local needs but may include Language Support Teachers and Bilingual Support Assistants, providing the following services:

  • Consultation and engagement with communities to ensure high levels of participation in schools
  • Provision of assessment of English as an Additional Language
  • Provision of EAL support for new and advanced learners of EAL (advisory support and in some instances, where available, direct support)
  • Making links with community led and based supplementary schools
  • Training and development for school based staff
