There is a statutory requirement for every looked after
child to have a Personal Education Plan (PEP). A PEP is built on
dialogue between the looked after child, social worker, designated
teacher, carers and parents. It should focus on the action that is
required for the child to reach his/her full potential. The plan
must cover:
- achievement record (academic or otherwise)
- developmental and educational needs
- short-term targets
- long-term plans and aspirations.
The PEP should contribute to the stability of a looked after
child's life, minimising disruption and breakdown in school
placement. It should also contribute to isolating special
educational needs.
